Police Commissioner Suryadev Singh is a doting grandfather to his only granddaughter, Kajal. However, unbeknownst to Suryadev, Kajal's life is under threat from his embittered cousin, Vishamber. Vishamber's father had bequeathed his entire estate to his nephew Suryadev instead of Vishamber. Now Vishamber wants to kill Kajal, thus becoming the sole heir to the inheritance. Some goons attempt to kidnap Kajal but a bystander, Karan, fights them off and rescues her.
Impressed, Suryadev appoints him as Kajal's bodyguard and they both leave for the town of Sundernagar, which is their ancestral home. However, Suryadev does not know that the kidnapping as well as Karan's rescue of Kajal were staged in order to win Suryadev's trust and that Karan is in fact an assassin hired by Vishamber to kill Kajal. Raj Kanwar is easily the most underrated director of the 90s. He delivered many hits from Deewana to Laadla to Jaan to Jeet and Judaai. Jaan was a successful film at the BO primarily because it was extremely well promoted.
I remember how aggressively the film's producer (Ashok Ghai) and the music company (Tips) played the songs/trailers on almost every channel. The story of Jaan reminds me of Ashok Ghaik's elder brother Subhash Ghai's smash hit Hero. They are not exactly the same but there is some resemblance.
Ajay Devgun's raw appeal worked in his favor and Twinkle Khanna was a breath of fresh air in this film. The love scenes and drama will seem over the top today, but in 1996 it did seem enjoyable. The comedy was not up to the mark though (Johnny Lever and Priya Arun). Acting wise Ajay Devgun was quite good.
He had done similar roles in Vijaypath and Jigar and Divyashakti and well, you get the picture! For her second film, Twinkle Khanna was good.
She looked extremely pretty. Vivek Mushran was alright. Amrish Puri was excellent in a role that suited him all the way.
One of the biggest strengths of the film was its music. Raj Kanwar's sense of rhythm, Anand-Milind's gift of melody and Anand Bakshi's poetic capabilities made Jaan one of the best albums of 1996.

The title song was the pick of the lot, but the overall Indian/folksy flavor of the songs ensured that the songs continue to play in the interiors even 20 years later. In fact Subhash Ghai was so impressed with the music of the film that he personally designed the song promos. Raj Kanwar knew exactly how to direct a film for that time period. He infused all the necessary elements in perfect quantities and made sure that the film was balanced in all respects. Drama was his forte and this film had (over)loads of it. It's not great cinema but it is surely paisa vasool and entertaining stuff.
If you like a 100% commercial Bollywood potboiler, Jaan is for you!

Plot[edit]
Police Commissioner Suryadev Singh (Amrish Puri) looks after his granddaughter Kajal (Twinkle Khanna) after her parents were poisoned by his enemies. Suryadev's cousin Vishambar (Suresh Oberoi) is plotting the complete ruin of Suryadev, along with his wife and his brother in-law Bhanwari (Shakti Kapoor), because Vishambar's late father had given Vishambar's share of property, including a village Sundernagar, to Suryadev as Vishambar has married someone against his wishes. Vishambar plans to kill Kajal to avenge himself and with Kajal gone, his son Nagendra can inherit they property. Vishambar hires Karan (Ajay Devgn) for this.
Karan is a young man in need of money for treating his ailing mother in hospital. By rescuing Kajal in a fake kidnapping drama enacted by Vishambar's goons, he wins Suryadev's confidence. Suryadev then decides to send Kajal to his village to stay with some relatives, along with Karan as her bodyguard, convinced that he will protect her.
In the village, Kajal falls in love with Karan, but he does not reciprocate. He even tries to kill her on many occasions, but hesitates for some reason. Finally he decides to tell her everything, but Kajal refuses to listen. She woos him till he finally falls for her. Interspersed between all this is Johnny Lever and his girlfriend with their hilarious acts.
In the meantime, Vishambar gets to know that Karan has fallen for Kajal, and hires another killer, Dilavar to eliminate both of them. Kajal is kidnapped, and Karan rescues her and kills Dilavar.
Suryadev arrives at the village on hearing of the disappearance of Kajal and Karan, and gets to know of Karan's real motive because of a note written by Karan meant for Kajal to read, before he falls for her, left in his room. He then orders Karan's arrest. He finds his granddaughter with Karan, but she refuses to let him harm the latter, and both elope again. Karan and Kajal are finally apprehended by Suryadev. Karan is arrested and tortured, but he does not reveal who actually hired him to kill Kajal, for fear that his mother would be affected.
Suryadev then arranges for his granddaughter to be married to Rohit, son of his longtime friend. She agrees to the marriage, but on the condition that Karan will be released from jail, to which Suryadev agrees.
Karan learns about Kajal's wedding plans and leaves enraged, to rescue his mother. Rohit is kidnapped by Bhanwari, and Karan is called to kill Rohit at their hideout if he wants his mother back. Karan goes and rescues Rohit and his mother, killing the goons. But Suryadev thinks Karan is behind the kidnapping, and gives orders for him to be shot at sight.
Karan arrives at the wedding scene with Rohit and explains everything. Karan then insists that Rohit gets married to Kajal. Vishambar, present at the scene, gets to know of what has happened to his household when he receives a phone call from a dying Bhanwari, and enraged at Karan, snatches a machine gun and fires indiscriminately as Rohit is being married to Kajal, but Karan fights Vishambar and kills him.
As the police take Karan away, Suryadev promises him a quick return from jail and marriage with Kajal.
